It is important that people should be aware that there are many other diseases/viruses which can be obtained through many different routes such as sexual intercourse. One of the most fatal if not the most fatal is the HIV virus , which although is stereotyped into categories such as third world , drug addicts , homosexuals etc , is a virus which can be obtained by any person of any age or ethnic group in one of several different ways. Intravenous drug users who share needles (with an infected person) are at risk , as are people who practice unsafe sex (formerly myself) , people having blood transfusions which have not been screened and also mother to child during pregnancy. Hopefully I will be able to promote awareness to HIV over time and teach some people that it is not all doom and gloom and I can be spoken to and associated with without the risk of me 'giving you a disease'. I may be HIV positive but I am in no way contagious through everyday activity. this is the same for the rest of the people in the world who have unfortunatly obtained the virus. Although the virus is incurable , there is hope that this will change as lots of medicines have been introduced to help prolong the life of HIV sufferers. in the 1990's the medicines now available were unheard of and nothing more than a dream but now they are reality and to my knowledge (I am not currently taking any) they are quite succesful although they do carry a chance of side effects. Having HIV changes a lot of things and life may never be the same for myself and other people infected , but thankfully there are loads of support services available and people willing to try to help you. So if your reading this please take some advice from someone who has had there world torn apart:
1. If you are unsure of your status go for a test (its much safer to know than not to know)
2. ALWAYS practice safe sex regardless who it be with , wether its with someone you have known years or months , gay , bi sexual or straight! Safe sex should be the only sex and condoms can be obtained free
3. If you are an IV drug user make sure you use your own needles ONLY and dispose of them in a sharps bin when done , do not allow anyone to use any of your equiptment , i have heard that even using the same spoon with heroin can be dangerous , i am not sure of this as i have never injected but PLEASE be careful.
