HIV And AIDS - The Difference
Many people do not know the difference between HIV and AIDS and most think it is there or there abouts the same thing. HIV is a retrovirus which attacks the bodys immune system eventually leading to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). There is no set time scale to say when a HIV positive person will obtain AIDS , but a person is usually judged to have AIDS when they have been infected with what is known as an opportunist infection. HIV positive sufferers are at risk of opportunist infections when there cd4 cell count (a type of white blood cells which fight infections) drops below 200 , although it is believed that having a cd4 percentage (the amount of your white blood cells which are cd4) falls below 20 per cent a person is also at risk of opportunist infections. The most common opportunist infections are Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia (PCP) , Tuberculosis , Lymphoma , Kaposi's sarcoma plus many fungal and bacterial infections. Also there are AIDS related symptoms , most commonly being Weight Loss and Dementia.
